The Benefits of Support Resources for Breast Cancer Patients

Access to supportive services increases breast cancer survival rates by up to 64% and decreases recurrence rates by up to 48%!

Often, when a person is diagnosed with breast cancer, family and friends rally around them for support. Little do they know that their support (and access to other support resources) makes a GIANT difference in their survival! Several comprehensive studies have now shown the positive impact of having support, citing up to 64% increased survival rates and significant reduction in recurrence rates, too!

According to Meira Epplein in a study published in the Journal fo Clinical Oncology, enhanced social support can help to improve your disease outcome and chances of recurrence. The study looked at several lifestyle factors that could contribute in the progression or digression of your Breast Cancer journey, breaking them down into four categories which include:

1.       Physical Well-Being

2.       Psychological Well-Being

3.       Social Well-Being

4.       Material Well-Being

And, surprisingly, while all the categories inspected are important, the category that showed the most significant association with decreasing the recurrence and mortality of breast cancer patients was social well-being. Marriage, family, social support and interpersonal relationships all help to reduce the risks of recurrence.

Don’t be afraid to ask for support, we all need it, and social support can ultimately improve your emotional health and your overall health, especially when going through Breast Cancer treatment. Outlook and the willingness to seek support play a key role in improved outcomes and prognosis.

During these stressful times, studies seem to suggest that deepening connections with your spouse or intimate partner, developing meaningful friendships and nurturing those you already have, growing in your personal faith, strengthening social ties and seeking community involvement are all key.

Going Beyond the Pink is proud to offer effective and necessary support resources that help support you in your breast cancer journey from diagnosis through survivorship. Now that you know just how important that is, make sure to reach out for the support you need!
