As many breast cancer patients and survivors go through treatment and become busy it can be hard to remember to make space for taking care of yourself.
There is no single right way to heal, cope or feel better, the process is different for everyone. Although what seems to be consistent is the need to prioritize emotional well being through self care practices like relaxation techniques and participating in enjoyable activities that can enhance mental resilience and emotional balance.
As you know life doesn't stop for cancer and in trying to balance treatment with family, work and day-to-day tasks, self care often is not the first thought and can be forgotten. If you feel like there is no time for the little things anymore you are not alone. But self-care doesn’t have to mean spa treatments or be time-consuming.
In this post, we will discuss why self care is important for breast cancer patients and survivors. We will talk about how it helps with emotional well-being and share some practical tips to make it work.
How do I practice self care?
Here are simple at home self care steps:
1. Creating a soothing environment
Designate a cozy spot in your home where you can relax and unwind, fill it with your favorite blankets, pillows and items that bring you comfort.
Use of essential oils, aromatherapy can have a calming effect on your mind and body. Scents such as lavender can promote relaxation.
2. Engage in Gentle Movement
Practice gentle stretches or going for a walk outside.
Yoga on sofa- explore yoga poses that are gentle on your body and can promote relaxation.
Look for beginner friendly routines designed for cancer patients. Staying active can boost your energy levels, improve mood, and promote overall well-being.
3. Nurture your emotional well-being
Practice self compassion: Be kind and patient with yourself. Acknowledge your emotions, allow yourself to grieve and process your feelings, and give yourself permission to rest and recharge when needed.
Surround yourself with a strong support network: Connect with friends, family, or other breast cancer patients who can offer encouragement, understanding, and practical assistance when needed.
4. Prioritize sleep
Establish a bedtime routine: create a consistent routine before bed to signal your body that it’s time to wind down. This can include activities such as reading a book, journaling, and meditating.

Take a few moments each day to practice deep breathing. Inhale slowly through your nose, filling your lungs with air, and exhale deeply through your mouth. This can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
Guided meditation: Explore guided meditation apps or online resources specifically designed for cancer patients. These can provide you with gentle guidance to help calm your mind. Have a spa day at home!
Having a spa day at home is a wonderful way to relax and rejuvenate without leaving the comfort of your own space. Start with finding a peaceful quiet area in your home. Gather your supplies such as a towel, bathrobe, slippers, skin care supplies including your favorite scrubs and moisturizer. Take a warm bath or shower to cleanse your whole body and relax!
By following these tips, you can prioritize your physical and emotional well being, engage in gradual gentle movements to keep your body strong, cultivate supportive relationships, stay informed and empower yourself throughout your treatment and recovery. Remember you are strong.
